PAINTING ALEC DOOMADGEE

In October 2018, Matt Smith and I embarked on a 6000km round trip to the Gulf Country, far-north Queensland.

Matt had heard about Waanyi man, Alec Doomadgee, and hatched a plan to meet and paint him. Quite a far-fetched idea given he had no means of getting there, nor did he have any confidence in his portrait painting ability. A phone call to me and I was on- board so that was the first bit sorted, but it was Matt’s own journey that intrigued me the most. So much so that I was compelled to document his journey…
